Research Interests: I am developing MRI pulse sequences (the programs that control the measurements that are made using an MR scanner). The focus of my research is fast 2D imaging. In particular I am developing a method called TOSSI (T-One insensitive Steady State Imaging). This method is used to generate pure T2 contrast in a steady state sequence. Since most pathology is diagnosed with T2W images, this method has many potential clinical applications. Recently I implemented an inversion-optimized, multi-slice, parallel version of TOSSI and tested it in healthy human subjects. This sequence allows fast multi-slice T2 weighted imaging of the head in ~800 msec/slice. Since the T2 contrast is generated in a short time, I have shown that it is possible to acquire T2W images of the head in a moving subject, something not achievable by the standard clinical T2W TSE (Turbo Spin Echo) sequence.
